The short version

For a 300–400 lb freight item you’ll keep 15–25 years, seeing and operating one in person before buying is worth the trip — returns run $400–$600. Regional note: Florida and the Southeast have the easiest in-person access and the lowest freight (Alexander & Sheridan ships in-state for ~$50 vs $90–$260 from MD/NC makers). Most other metros have cabinet beds through general furniture/mattress dealers even where no cabinet-bed specialist exists.
In person vs online — the honest call
- Buy in person if you can. A cabinet bed is heavy freight with a $400–$600 return cost; operating the mechanism and lying on the mattress first removes almost all the risk (see Common Problems). Local dealers also handle delivery and warranty service — meaningfully better when something needs a claim.
- Buying online can work if you’ve seen the same model elsewhere, you’ve measured your delivery path (Dimensions Database), and you accept freight delivery and harder returns.
